About Because They Lived

Because They Lived was nearly a decade in the making. After the death of our daughter, Emmalin, we knew we wanted to create something in her honor—but for many years, nothing felt quite right. We carried the desire to remember her in a meaningful way, while continuing to navigate the long journey of grief ourselves.

Beginning in 2025, several friends and acquaintances experienced the devastating loss of a child. Once again, we witnessed an outpouring of love and support in the immediate aftermath—meals delivered, messages sent, care freely given. But we also began to notice something familiar: over time, that support slowly faded.

Like many families who lose a child, we were surrounded by compassion in the days and weeks following Emmalin’s death. But as weeks turned into months, the world moved on—while our grief did not. That reality sparked a question: What if support didn’t have to end? What if, years after a child’s death, families still received reminders that their child mattered, that they were remembered, that they were not alone? How powerful could a simple note be—ten years later—acknowledging a life that will always matter?

From that question, Because They Lived was born.

Because They Lived exists to provide gentle, long-term support to families who have experienced the loss of a child. We believe every family deserves continued care, and every child deserves to be remembered. Grief does not disappear with time—and neither should compassion.

Our volunteers are individuals who understand loss firsthand or have experienced grief in other meaningful ways. More importantly, they are people with hearts for caring for others—people who recognize that even the smallest act of remembrance can bring comfort. Through simple, intentional gestures, we are committed to showing that support does not have to fade, and that kindness, even years later, can make a profound difference.
